Get SET, Skills, Employment, Training Program aims is to tackle the low uptake of Aboriginal people into care work and especially at regional and remote locations across the Northern Territory.
Completion of this program with employers will build career pathways and support workers' future opportunities within Disability, Aged, Community and or Health Industries work.
Career Mapping
The Community Services and Health industries are a key provider of new jobs in the Australian labour market.
Over the coming years, employment in the industry is expected to increase significantly.
Community services and health jobs are about helping people. Work includes caring for the elderly, working with children and young people and supporting people with a disability to live a full life.
A career poster and a suite of resources are provided as a career map. Detailed job summaries inform the role of Support Worker, Senior Support Worker and Team Leader jobs.

Get SET Skills Employment Training Model for Practice
Get SET Skills Employment Training Model for Practice was developed in consultation with employers to implement a local workforce strategy that will equip employers to provide services for clients with a permanent or significant disability in remote communities.
Get SET Skills Employment Training Model for Practice guides a good practice approach for the delivery of vocational training in regional and remote locations to support Aboriginal people taking up work providing a handy useful guide for employers, employment service providers and registered training providers.
Skills Recognition Kit
This Skills Recognition Kit has been developed to raise awareness of current workers who have not sought out vocational training or recognition of their skills in Aged, Disability and Community Services workplaces.
The Kit provides a step-by-step guide for workers ready to advance in their careers by seeking recognition of experience, skills and knowledge.
Having your current skills and knowledge assessed can identify, acknowledge, reward current skills and opens the opportunity for more vocational training and personal development.
This Kit includes self-assessment tools closely linked to Job details provided with this Kit, informed by employer’s from across the Top-End of Northern Territory.
Support Worker
Support Workers often work in community and/or residential settings and follow an individual plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require assistance due to ageing, disability, or some other reason.
Support Workers can move into a Senior Support Worker role after they have gained enough experience at work and feel confident to guide and advise others.
Senior Support Worker
Senior Support Workers have experience working with small teams and delivering care support services in community and/or residential settings.
Senior Support Workers can in time become Team Leaders in their organisations.
Team Leader
Team Leaders have experience working with small teams and delivering care support services in community and/or residential settings.
The main aim of a Team Leader is to provide support and direction to others, ensuring a safe working environment.
Get Skills Program Introductory Guide
Get Skills provides guidance to team leaders, mentors and/or community leaders on how to work with interested community members to undertake a series of activities to prepare participants for the workplace This resource is designed to develop employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, as well as workplace health and safety.
The Introductory Guide provides advice on the use of the thirteen modules included with this Kit, set out in three clusters, covering a range of critical skills and knowledge associated with work as a Support Worker in Community and Health Industry jobs. Get Skills is primarily targeted to Aboriginal community members and a very useful resource for new workers from non-english-speaking backgrounds.
