Skills shortages in the Northern Territory - we need your feedback

Digital skills, access to local training and an ageing workforce. These are a handful of challenges affecting industry in the Northern Territory that we’re working to alleviate this year.

We received this feedback at our first Industry Advisory Group (IAG) meeting where we invited twenty two industry leaders to share their experiences on what’s affecting their industry.

Here are the results.

Challenges affecting all industries include:

  • Knowledge of the industry - career paths and skills
  • Appeal and perception of the industry
  • Transient labour market - retaining employees
  • Attracting and retaining local skilled workers
  • Developing indigenous workers
  • Developing digital skills and foundation skills

Industry specific challenges:

  • Disability services and extractive industries - lack of regulation around standards and qualifications for entry employment
  • Maritime, renewables, oil and gas and arboriculture - accessing local structured training
  • Civil construction - inconsistent demand for works
  • Retail and health - ageing workforce, particularly in remote locations

Why are we asking for this feedback?

ISACNT is the conduit between industry and government. With this up-to-the-minute data and insight, the NT Government can better prioritise skills needs and direct funding to developing workforce capacity for occupations that need assistance the most.

We want you to be a part of the IAG
