BACKGROUND
The ASPI Program - will provide sustained research focus on the security of Australia’s north and the north’s critical role in contributing to the broader security of Australia. The program will be focussed on:

  1. Maintaining a strong public policy focus on the role of the north in the broader security of Australia at a time when strategic circumstances are driving new policy thinking in Canberra.
  2. Develop a modernised way of thinking about the north and security by updating strategic frameworks that remain anchored in the 1980’s ‘defence of Australia’ context.
  3. Situate the north in a broader discussion about national security interests beyond Defence – encompassing Home Affairs, border and customs, space, cyber and bio-security and energy security.

Why is this program important?
The ASPI research program will engage Australian Government and International decision makers, industry decision makers and other strategic thinkers and influencers on the strategic importance and future development of the Northern Territory and its role in supporting defence, national security and industry – that is will facilitate further discussion on ‘a strong north makes for a more secure Australia’. Program aims to:

  • maintain a strong public policy focus on the role of the north in the broader security of Australia at a time when strategic circumstances are driving new policy thinking in Canberra.
  • develop a modernised way of thinking about the north and security by updating strategic frameworks that remain anchored in the 1980’s ‘defence of Australia’ context.
  • situate the north in a broader discussion about national security interests beyond Defence – encompassing Home Affairs, border force and customs, space, cyber, humanitarian and disaster response, bio-security and energy security.

The strategic circumstances in the Indo-Pacific region have changed dramatically, increasing the importance of the North in the defence of Australia and in support of Australia’s engagement in the region.

The APSI research program will ensure that the critical role of the North in our nation’s security is reflected in government and defence decisions at a time when North Australia’s defence capabilities need to respond quickly to the rapidly changing geo-political landscape.

The ASPI research program will further the conversation and increase the discussions around the North’s role in Australia’s defence, at time when the North’s defence capability and capacity needs to be expedited.

Any review of the 2016 Defence White Paper, Australia’s force posture or the integrated investment plan should consider expediting the timelines on developing defence and defence-support industry capabilities in Northern Australia.

The Territory is making significant investments in maritime infrastructure to support Australia’s maritime defence capabilities.

Why ASPI?
ASPI were the obvious first choice as ASPI is Australia’s leading think tank on defence and national security: a status recognised globally and particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

ASPI plays a leading role in national policy debates on defence, cyber policy, counter-terrorism, border security, law enforcement and risk and resilience.
